Weaving Life: The Story of Ecuador’s “Panama Hat” (Part 1/3)

The Story of Ecuador’s Panama Hat

The next three posts will be a three part documentary on the world’s most famous straw hat, the “Panama Hat.”

-Although woven in Ecuador the hat got it’s name back when the workers of the Panama Canal wore the hat to protect themselves from the sun.

-The hat, as the documentary explains, is a symbol of status and authority in First World countries, where it sells for up to $10USD yet the native weavers only earn 1/10, or less, of the selling price; a commonality in Panama, Honduras and all Third World countries.

-The art of weaving is dying because, although being a rich part of Ecuador’s history and culture, it does not provide enough pay for the weavers to support their families.

In a way we are all entrepreneurs but the Business Brigade empowers entrepreneurs in Panama to develop their business to allow them to support their family and community.
